Easing of liquid CO2 supplies used to make Dry Ice

I am pleased to be able to report that new supplies of liquid CO2 are now coming in, and that two UK plants have been re-commissioned. We received nearly 20 tonnes yesterday and have re-started dry ice production.

As all users have virtually zero stock we cannot expect to get our future supplies on a 24 hour basis as we did before the shortage, but we are hoping that we will get back to a normal supply situation over the next couple of weeks.
We would like to ask for your continued understanding if we need to shorten or delay your orders in the following weeks. We will make every effort not todo this in the knowledge that we have the support of our contracted supplier Praxair, who are committed to maintaining supplies to their regular users whenever possible.
Please keep in touch with our staff if you have any major events coming up during July so we can plan accordingly.
Finally my thanks to you all for the understanding you have shown to us over this difficult period.

CO2 shortages

Dear Customer,
We have just been advised that stocks of liquid CO2 in the UK are virtually zero today (14.06.2018), and that it will be a week to 10 days before supplies return to normal.
The reason for the sudden shortage is that the UK plants that produce CO2 have all been closed for maintenance without prior advice.
We have never experienced this situation to date as our supplier, Praxair, uses both UK supplies and imports from Scandinavia and the Continent brought in on their own liquid gas tanker ships. With a planned UK supplyshutdown they make up for UK shortages with imports, but with a sudden stop of UK supplies they need time to fill the gap.
We were lucky to receive a fill of our tank last night so we have some possibility to supply dry ice into next week, but after that our stocks will be zero by midweek if we supply all orders to their usual full amount.
We propose to to be fair to all our regular large user Customers in this difficult period and limit supplies to 50% of the order during next week, which may possibly allow us to bridge the gap. We will only supply our regular customersin this way. We will try to fulfil small on line orders, but please be prepared for disappointment. We will call/e-mail you if we cannot supply.
Our sales staff will be keeping you up to date with the situation by phone and e-mail as your orders come in, and you are welcome to call us to hear the latest news.
I can confirm that we, together with our suppliers, will try to minimise the impact on your businesses, but regret to say that this is a true case of Force Majeure that we could not have foreseen before today.
Best regards,
Mike Bennett

Halloween Effects with Dry Ice

halloweenCut the Pumpkin so that it is possible to put a glass or cup or similar vessel inside and to be able to remove it to fill it and to empty it. A door/hatch in the back is a good way to do this.

Make sure the point where you want the fog to come out is below the top of the vessel. The fog will start to come out of the hole at the lowest point, so make sure there are no escape points lower than the one you want.

Fill the vessel with hot water (not too hot or boiling for safety reasons) and when ready, add dry ice. If it is 16 mm dry ice sticks 2 or 3 sticks should be enough. If it is 3 mm something like a heaped desert spoonful would be a good start. Close the hatch to stop the fog coming out there.

If the fog effect is not as much as you want, either you have not used enough ice or the water is too cold. Adjust accordingly. You will find that a small amount of hot water cools very quickly with the ice, so the bigger the vessel the longer and better the effect. If the effect stops and there is still ice in the water, throw it away and start again. Do not add ice to cold water, it will not have much effect.

Another good show is to use a cauldron. Here you will have the chance to have much more hot water, and throwing in a good quantity of ice will cause the fog effect to flood across a table and drop to the floor.

Add effect to the fog with coloured lights.

For spooky food and drinks put the plates or glasses on a tray which can hold the hot water and add dry ice just before serving. BE CAREFUL TO ENSURE THAT NO DRY ICE COMES INTO CONTACT WITH THE FOOD OR DRINK. KEEP DRY ICE AWAY FROM CHILDREN AND DO NOT TOUCH IT WITH BARE HANDS. IT CAN CAUSE BURNS.

DO NOT CREATE DRY ICE FOG IN AN UNVENTILATED AREA OR AN ENCLOSED SPACE.
